About Me
A Cornishman in exile since leaving Liskeard in 1965, but still with ties in Cornwall. Was born in the shaddow of Caradon Hill long before any radio masts existed on the hill and watched the ITV mast being erected from the classroom at the then Liskeard Secondary Modern school! Hi Mike, yes its been a long time since we chatted on 80m. We moved to Winchester nearly 2 years ago and I've only just finished building the shack, but as yet no antennas - shame! Re TV from CH site, I can also recall the large tethered balloon they used to do the field strength tests prior to considering erecting the 750' mast on site. I suspect that your wife may well remember that as well. The very first aerial mast to put on Caradon Hill was a telegraph pole put up by SWEB. Blamey and Morcom shared the SWEB pole and the then wooden hut that stood at the base. Both mobile radio systems used low band VHF Pye equipment transmitting around 85MHz and receiving around 72MHz and using 50KHz channel spaciing. This wooden pole was finally replaced with lattice tower and wooden hut was replaced with a steel cabinet and the AA then had equipment installed on site controlled by Fanum Truro and Fanum Exeter. They also had UHF links between Four Lanes, Nr Redruth and Folley Gate Nr Oakhampton then onward UHF link to Exeter. I was a pretty slick system. The lattice blew down and I believe still remains as a twisted pile on the ground - I wonder if they have finally removed it yet?!! 73 Chris - G3VEH
